College Football Recruits -Mental Toughness Training for Athletes

From: PEAKSPORTS.com

Mental Toughness Training for Athletes

Improve Your Mental Toughness for Sports Performance

Many athletes search for the answer for how to become “mentally tough” and many athlete don’t know how to cultivate it. Even worse, many athletes and coaches don’t know what mental toughness is and how it can help their performance.

Athletes hear professional athletes and Olympians espouse the virtues of mental toughness training and how mental toughness was the reason for their great athletic achievements.

Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots highlighted the importance of mental toughness, “Football is so much about mental toughness, it’s digging deep, it’s doing whatever you need to do to help a team win.”

Alvin Kamara

From:  STACK.com

The Yoke Carry is a powerful strongman exercise that essentially hits every muscle in the body. It also requires enormous core strength, which is one of Kamara's calling cards. The New Orleans Saints running back rampaged his way to 1,554 all-purpose yards in his rookie season and earned a reputation for breaking tackles. Much of that ability can be attributed to his awesome functional core strength, but Sainst QB Drew Brees has theorized that Kamara's unique running style also makes him tougher to bring down. Specifically, Kamara always seems to have both feet on the ground when taking on contact.

The Split Squat: How to Master This Powerful Lower-Body Exercise

From:  STACK.com

The Split Squat is a powerful exercise due to its ability to build stability and strength in a unilateral stance. These are key components of athletic performance, as movements like sprinting and jumping are dependent upon strength in a unilateral stance.

Some top strength coaches (such as Mike Boyle) have even scrapped traditional bilateral Squats from their athletes' programs in favor of the Split Squat and its variations, specifically the Rear-Foot-Elevated Split Squat (RFESS). Though the Split Squat is often considered safer and more user-friendly than traditional Squat exercises, there's still a right way and a wrong way to introduce it to an athlete.

Here's why the Split Squat deserves a place in your routine and how you can go about mastering this powerful movement.

From: STACK.com

Every athlete wakes up with aches and pains from their training during the week. The easiest way to fix this issue is to take care of your mobility and flexibility early in the morning and allow your body to be warmed up for the rest of your day and into training. Squeezing mobility work into your busy morning routine might sound like a hassle, but it can takes less than three minutes if you utilize the right combination of movements. Perform each of the following three exercises for roughly 30 seconds each morning and you'll be amazed at how your energy and athleticism increase.

Stop on a Dime: 3 Exercises for Efficient Deceleration

From: STACK.com

What is deceleration? Slowing down, cutting or stopping completely: all three actions are examples of deceleration.

For being such a crucial skill, many athletes don't pay much attention to deceleration.

How efficiently muscles absorb force is what determines an athlete's ability to stop or change direction. Efficient deceleration is something all athletes can benefit from. It decreases the risk of injury and improves performance in sports. Getting stronger eccentrically and isometrically while also improving landing technique are some surefire ways to make you a better decelerator. Now, let's breakdown how an athlete can go about doing that.

3 Exercises to Finally Fix Your Tight Hip Flexors for Good

Article from: STACK.com

Tight hip flexors are a common complaint heard from athletes across all sports. Could it be from sitting in a desk for 8-plus hours a day if they are a student? Absolutely. Is it because they have a weak posterior chain? That's a likely contributor as well. Maybe they don't stretch enough? Also probably true. Or maybe it's their weak anterior core?

The point is that the modern young athlete is at incredibly high risk of having tight hip flexors due to both their lifestyle and common training habits. How do you know if you have tight hip flexors? And if you do, how should you go about fixing them? Read on for your answers.

1. Where are you going to College?

Bloomsburg University

2. What was the biggest reason you chose Bloom ?

The biggest reason in my decision for Bloomsburg was a combination of a few things. Academically, Bloom offers my major and has a very good program. As far as football goes, I was able to not only meet the football coaches on my visits, but also some of the players. This was so important because I felt like I fit in around them and they all seemed eager to try to get me to commit to Bloom. I left my visits with an image in my mind of myself playing next to those guys in the future. I also saw myself walking around the Bloom campus more so than the campuses of any other schools I had visited.

Becca Longo became the first female to sign a football scholarship at the division 2 level or higher last week when she signed with Adams State.

The Division 1 council has now voted to eliminate two a day practices in summer camps. They join division 3 in moving to a possible longer training camp with no double sessions to decrease the potential of injuries. The Division 2 council has voted for an “emergency legislation” to make this effective at their level at the end of April.

The Division 1 council has voted to adopt the following rules last week:

  • An early signing period for football in December
  • Allow for official visits beginning April 1 of a prospects Junior year and running through the end of June of the same year-cannot occur in conjunction with the prospect being at a camp or clinic
  • FBS schools will add a tenth assistant, effective in January of 2018

In addition to the evaluations, college coaches are allowed to make one phone call during this “Evaluation Period.”

The NCAA has also recommended changes to pre season practice format that falls in line with the player safety rules that have been recommended. The new rules would essentially do away with 2 a days and allow “camp” to start one week earlier to allow the same amount of practice opportunities. They are also suggesting the following format to summer camp during a given week:

3 days per week can be full contact practices

3 days per week must be non contact/minimal contact

1 day no practice

April will also be a big month for rule change votes, as we have discussed in the recent weeks.  Another one that is making some more noise and getting a strong push for the April vote is to loosen the restrictions on Redshirting players.  Currently any body that plays loses their redshirt year unless there is an injury.  The new proposal is trying to give players up to, possibly, 4 games to play in and still receive a Redshirt season.

PATRIOT LEAGUE

One of the most academically prestigious collegiate athletic conferences, the Patriot League’s seven football playing institutions are all renowned for the quality of their academics, the beauty of their campuses, and the tradition of football programs. Featuring some of the most recognizable institutional names in the world, the Patriot League also boasts competitive, quality football.

The Patriot League was long regarded as one of the lesser FCS leagues due to a policy of not awarding athletic scholarships. Though the financial aid packages that its schools awarded often came near to equalling a full scholarship, there was still a perception that the PL was not able to be steadily competitive within the FCS. The 2013 adoption of scholarships has helped improve talent however, and elevated the league’s image. Recent upsets of several FBS programs by Fordham (Army & Temple) has also helped legitimize the Patriot League on the national level.

Gettysburg Freshman LB - Shares Some Insight

Jordan Mason is freshman LB right now at Gettysburg College.

This is a bright young man who plans to major in physics.  Mason likes Gettysburg and the "amazing" professors very much. He likes the one on one attention and the challenging classes in a small school.   He mentioned to me the biggest surprise academically is how much homework he gets ! A lot more reading and work has to be done on his own then he had in HS.

New Rule Proposals:
With continued focus on player safety, there are three new rule proposals for next season that still need approval from the Playing Rules Oversight Panel, but are being pushed:
1.    Prohibit defensive players who run toward the Line of Scrimmage from leaping or hurdling Offensive Linemen on field goals or point after attempts.
2.    Require players to wear knee pads and have pants that cover the knees
3.    Including the nameplate area of jersey in the current horse collar tackle rule

College Football Recruiting News 03-14-17

Where are we now in the recruiting calendar?
Division 1 and 2 schools are currently in a “Quiet Period” until April 14th.  A Quiet Period means student athletes can visit college campuses and meet with coaches there, but coaches can have no off campus visits or evaluations of any student athletes at this time.  Student athletes can call coaches but the coaches cannot make any phone calls during a Quiet Period.
